How to Read 3-4 Books a Month

How to Read 3-4 Books a Month (without taking a vacation to do it)

With work and errands and working out and sleeping and cooking and family and everything else going on in your life, I get it. It’s really hard to get to reading for fun or for self development.  For me, that was the first thing that left when I got busy. However, there’s a super simple trick to get that dose of books in with basically zero time burden added to your schedule. Sound too good to be true?

Audiobooks.  Yep – audiobooks.  Here’s 5 tips to get in some reading and carve some time out for yourself in a busy day.

1. Find an audiobook that you love.  Audible.com is probably the easiest, and there’s an easy app for your phone.  I use it in conjunction with my Amazon Kindle account, and it’s great.  (There’s also a new feature that if you buy a Kindle book and it has an associated audiobook, you can buy both for a discount, which is nice for those of you who like to take notes and refernce them.)
Here are snapshots of the Audible app.  You can have a whole library of books, and it will track how much you are “reading” each day.  I aim to listen to at least 30 minutes each day, and sometimes I can easily listen to more.

2. Find time to listen to audiobooks while you are doing other things.  You can listen to audiobooks:

  • While you are in the shower (set your phone nearby and crank up the volume)
  • While you are on your commute
  • While you are running or walking
  • While you are doing dishes or cooking dinner or other chores

3. Want to save money?  Most local libraries loan audiobooks for free with a library card.

4. Want to save even more time?  Learn to listen to your audiobooks on 1.5x or 2x speed.  Start at 1.25x until it sounds normal to you, and then increase it to 1.5x and go up from there.  You’ll save even more time and be able to read even MORE books per month.

5. Challenge yourself to read one self-development book and one book for fun each month.  Work up from there to 3-4 a month.
