How to Tell People What you Do in 3 Easy Steps

Have you ever had someone ask you what you do and the first thing you say is, “it’s complicated”?  Especially as network marketers, sometimes we hesitate.  Do we talk about product first?  Should we talk about our business opportunity?  We end up saying something about working from home and it usually doesn’t resonate with someone who already has a job.  It’s confusing, we end up pausing, and whoever we talk to thinks we’re crazy because we can’t explain exactly what we do.  I’m going to teach you a simple 3 step formula that I learned that will share exactly how to tell people what you do. 

I learned the format of what I’m about to teach you from the amazing Donald Miller, author of Building a Storybrand and the podcast of the same name. (Both are incredible and I highly recommend them to clarify your message.)

These are the 3 questions you’ll want to answer for anyone you meet:

1. What is the pain point you help your customer solve?

2. What is your unique solution to that pain point?

3. What does your customer’s life look life after that pain point is resolved?

Example of how to tell people what you do if you in an Essential Oil company:

“There are so many families on a health journey to clean up their diet and exercise, and they make the switch to organic food and watch what they eat. Most people don’t realize it, but they’re likely to be putting up to 300 harmful chemicals on their skin every day from home cleaning and personal care products that are in their home, which can cause energy levels to dip and hormones to be out of whack, and many other health issues you don’t think of. I teach people how to very easily replace the products in their home in one stop shopping so they can rest assured that their health, and especially the health of their kids and pets are safe and the best it can be.”

Example of how to tell people what you do if you are in Anti-aging or Skincare:

Many women when they hit their 20s and 30s understand that they’re aging and that they want to prevent wrinkles, but with all the crazy marketing out there, there’s lots of confusion on exactly what scientifically prevents wrinkles and how to ensure that their skin ages beautifully. I help them craft a skincare routine that will get results in just a few easy steps a day so that they don’t have to worry about if what they’re buying is really working. They can rest easy and look forward to decades of great looking skin.

Example of how to tell people what you do if you are in Makeup:

So many women never learned how to properly put on makeup, and if they did, with kids and jobs, they usually don’t have much time in the morning. I show women easy makeup routines that take 10 minutes or less that will have them looking years younger, boost their confidence, and maybe even have their partners looking at them differently.
